The Windy Day Cocktail

This painting came out of my solo show at Cincinnati Art Galleries, which was all about cocktails. It was the only figurative piece in the show and features my wife drinking one of her favorite cocktails. I thought it’d be fun to shoot some reference photos outside with the sky behind her. We were going for something quiet and understated, but the weather had other ideas.

As soon as we got there, the wind kicked up and “subtle” went right out the window. The drink was splashing out of the glass, her hair was flying everywhere, and we realized we should just roll with it instead of fighting it. That unexpected moment is what ended up becoming The Windy Day Cocktail.
